CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Lunch wasn’t the biggest fanfare.

While we ate, we talked mostly about mundane stuff.

What he was getting his parents for Christmas. No idea.

How his Christmas shopping was going so far. Terribly.

And what I wanted for Christmas, since I wouldn’t let him work on the house. Undecided.

Truthfully, I was starting to reconsider his offer to fix up the manor, but I didn’t know if his offer would still be viable after I said what I needed to say.

If I ever figured out what I was going to say.

Asher took our empty plates and glasses to the sink and ran water over them before shutting the tap off and turning to face me.

He met my nervous gaze and smiled warmly.

“Can I say something?” he asked softly.

I nodded. “Of course.”

He let out a slow breath and strolled over to the kitchen table where we’d just had our lunch and sat down in front of me. He took both my hands in his and ran his calloused thumbs over my knuckles in a soothing pattern. “I can tell that whatever you have to say to me is hard for you,” he said softly. “But I promise I won’t judge you. I really care about you, Mari. And nothing you say will ever change that, nor will it change what I want to happen between us. Which is for us to be an us.”

His words sent fear and warmth rushing through my bloodstream in a tangled mess of conflicting emotions, making my heart beat faster. It didn’t help that when he’d taken his coat off at the door, his protection charm had been jostled from its hiding place under his shirt, and was now hanging in plain view.

My palm tingled with a phantom ache, reminding me of the last time I’d touched the piece of obsidian.

I sprang out of my chair and started to pace the length of the kitchen table.

I liked Asher. I really did. He was good and kind, and he obviously cared about me. That much I knew for sure. But would he honestly stick around after finding out that I was a witch? Or worse, would he genuinely think I was insane for believing in witches?

On the other hand, he did say it wouldn’t be a problem if I did have some kind of mental illness. Except, I didn’t. I wasn’t insane in any way, shape or form, and I desperately wanted him to believe me. Better yet, I wanted him to not try to kill me if he really was a hunter. And if he was a violent, bloodthirsty killer in disguise, was it worth it to risk my life in the hope of something more between us?

“Mari?” Asher said quietly, so quiet that if I wasn’t in tuned to his every breath, I would have missed it.

I halted my frantic pacing and turned to face him.

He smiled. “It’s okay, I promise.”

I sighed and pinched the bridge of my nose.

Closing my eyes, I took a deep breath, then met his warm, steady gaze.
